Fujitsu Ltd unveiled a line of new high-end servers, based on an Intel (http://www.intel.com/) Corp's Itanium microprocessor, in a challenge to International Business Machines Corp (IBM) and Sun Microsystems Inc, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The new Primequest servers are designed for heavy-duty jobs now often handled by IBM mainframe systems or servers based on IBM's Power chips and Unix system, the Journal said.

Shipments will begin in June, with the new servers initially running versions of Linux from Red Hat Inc (http://www.redhat.com) and Novell Inc (http://www.novell.com). Fujitsu will begin offering a version using Microsoft's Windows Server 2003 in September, the report said.

Intel, which developed the Itanium chip with help from Hewlett-Packard Co, hopes Fujitsu's new machines can gain ground against both IBM and Sun Microsystems Inc, which has an operating system called Solaris and a chip technology called Sparc, the report said.

Nevertheless, Fujitsu plans to remain a close partner of Sun, and to keep selling Sparc-based computers in addition to the Itanium line, the report added.

The Journal quoted Fujitsu corporate executive vice-president Chiaki Ito as saying at press conference in San Francisco that the company expects to sell about 10,000 of the new servers over three years.

It cited Richard McCormack, a Fujitsu senior vice-president, as saying that represents about 2 billion usd in revenue.

McCormack also indicated Fujitsu expects to invest about 300 million usd over roughly three years on "ecosystem" software and hardware being created to support the Itanium chip, the report said.
